The Cottonwood Head Start school garden serves 100+ children ages 3-5 years old and their families. It is a place to learn about growing plants, about healthy nutrition, and about caring for the environment. At the same time children gain valuable knowledge about science, mathematics, and develop their language and artistic skills.
In addition, this garden is serving as an outdoor classroom for several classes at the neighboring Cottonwood Elementary School. The third grade students are now “reading buddies” for the Head Start students as well as working in the garden. One of the third-grade students remarked that the garden has changed his life and the life of other students.
The garden will contribute to community building by being a place for families to gather, work together, learn together and celebrate. It will create community connections with gardeners, community groups and businesses in the area.
